Food Bank of North Alabama asking residents to join fight against hunger during the holidays

HUNTSVILLE– With the holidays now here, the Food Bank of North Alabama is requesting the community join the annual effort to fight food insecurity among its residents.

As part of its endeavor, the Food Bank is promoting the annual Giving Tuesday, a day for people to “give back to the organizations serving their community.” Observed on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving, this year’s Giving Tuesday is Dec. 3.

“The Food Bank of North Alabama is fortunate to be based in such a giving community,” Food Bank of North Alabama CEO Shirley Schofield said. “This year’s Giving Tuesday is especially important to the Food Bank because we’re seeing more and more people requiring assistance with accessing food for their families.

“When people choose the Food Bank to give to during Giving Tuesday, it will help to provide needed food for our programs that will stay right here in North Alabama and honor our 40 years of service to this community. We pride ourselves on our efficiency. Every dollar donated helps provide 7 meals to people who need them this holiday season.”

According to Schofield, the Food Bank has seen a 24% increase in the need for food assistance since October 2023. Additionally, according to Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, there are more than 184,000 people who face food insecurity in the 11 counties – Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marshall, Morgan and Jackson – the Food Bank of North Alabama covers.

The Food Bank of North Alabama distributed 15.1 million pounds of food – equivalent to 12.6 million meals – in its 2024 fiscal year, a record for the nonprofit organization.

Some of the Food Bank’s biggest agency partners include Manna House, Downtown Rescue
Mission and the Salvation Army.
