ATHENS — Thanks to the efforts of the staff at Athens-Limestone Hospital, kids’ tummies will be less full during the holiday season.

Athens-Limestone Hospital donated nearly 11,000 food items to the Full Tummy Project of Athens and Limestone County, an organization dedicated to providing weekend meals for children experiencing food insecurity.
And, local families weren’t the only winners.
The contribution earned Athens-Limestone Hospital first place in the Huntsville Hospital Health System’s annual food drive challenge.

“We are so proud of our team,” said Traci Collins, president of Athens-Limestone Hospital. “Their generosity reflects who we are as a hospital — people committed to caring for our neighbors with both skill and heart.”
Each affiliate within the health system was encouraged to collect food items for a local nonprofit, fostering both friendly competition and a shared expression of the compassion that defines the care provided across our communities.
Winners were selected based on the percentage of items collected above each hospital’s goal — set at one item per employee.
Athens-Limestone Hospital exceeded that goal by an extraordinary margin, and the Full Tummy organizers were “absolutely blown away” by the outpouring of support.
Across the entire health system, more than 34,000 items were collected and donated to food banks and community partners, ensuring families in need feel supported during a critical time of year.
Two departments at Athens-Limestone Hospital were recognized:
- Food Service earned the award for the largest donation per capita.
- Nursing Supervisors won the drawing among departments that collected at least 40 items.
“Supporting The Full Tummy Project reminds us that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference for children and families right here at home,” Collins said.
