GeoResilience Summit returning to Huntsville’s Jackson Center

HUNTSVILLE – Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) is a discipline that comprises the exploitation and analysis of imagery and geospatial information to describe, assess, and visually depict physical features and geographically referenced activities on Earth.

Now that a Google search cleared that up, know this – the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency and GEOHuntsville are partnering to bring the GeoResilience Summit back to Huntsville next month.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle welcomed leaders in the industry and officially announced the event, titled “Why Where Matters,’’ Tuesday in Big Spring Park East. Others speaking at the news conference were Sean Alexander of NGA Huntsville; David Lucas, GEOHuntsville executive director; and Shelisa Gardner, GEOHuntsville board member.

“In Huntsville, we pride ourselves on our aerospace, our defense, our cyber intelligence,” Battle said. “All those sectors flourish under us. But the importance of geospatial technology can’t be overstated. It’s the underpinning of all this work.”

The April 3 summit at the Jackson Center is an opportunity for participants to engage in discussions with experts from government, industry and academia about the impact of geospatial intelligence on national security and the explosion of technological innovations in Huntsville’s growing geospatial ecosystem.

The event will include a keynote speech from NGA Deputy Director Tonya Wilkerson and leaders from NASA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, U.S. Space Command, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Panel topics include:

  • How GIS Developments are Strengthening U.S. Resilience
  • How GEOINT Can Map Changes in Human Health
  • Geospatial Roles in Disaster Response & Climate Change
  • Expanding into Outer Space
  • Preparing for a Career in The Geospatial & STEM Industry & Government

A student career fair will be held simultaneously from 10 a.m.-2:45 p.m. featuring representatives from across the geospatial sector, including NGA and other federal agencies, industries and nonprofits. There is no cost for full-time high school and college students to attend the career fair. Industry experts will conduct resume reviews on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The summit aligns seamlessly with our legacy of pushing the boundaries of technological advancement and staying on the cutting edge of evolving technology,” Battle said. “And that’s we try to do is stay on that cutting edge so that we are able to have some of the best and brightest minds here and they can achieve success. That’s why we’re excited to announce the addition to the career fair component to this year’s event.

“We’ll be providing a platform for high tech stars of tomorrow so that they can shine today, and we ensure that Huntsville remains at the forefront of innovation for years to come.”

GEOHuntsville is sponsoring three scholarships worth $1,000 each will be awarded at the student career fair.

“I am so excited to announce the career fair, which is free to all college students here in Huntsville and seniors who are on their way to college,’’ said Gardner, a Huntsville native, Alabama A&M graduate and recent retiree from the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency. “We have invited some recruiters from NGA, FBI, NASA, Oak Ridge Research Lab and others who are coming to Huntsville to see about the greatest and the smartest students in the United States.

“So go to the GeoHuntsville website and you can find that information.”
