Gulf South champion Chargers earn No. 2 seed in NCAA South Region tournament

HUNTSVILLE — The UAH men’s basketball team, ranked No. 3 in the nation, and fresh off their sixth Gulf South Conference Tournament Championship, was named the No. 2 seed in the 2025 NCAA Division II South Region Men’s Basketball Championships.

The Chargers will be making their seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament and the 17th in program history, after capturing the Gulf South Conference tournament championship Sunday with a 101-95 win over Valdosta State. They will take on No. 7 seed Tampa in the first round Saturday.

The 2025 NCAA Division II South Region Men’s Basketball Championships will be on the campus of No. 1 seed Nova Southeastern, the only team to defeat UAH this season. The tournament times will be released today.

The South Region field additionally features No. 3 seed Florida Southern, No. 4 seed Valdosta State, No. 5 seed Lynn, No. 6 seed Montevallo, and No. 8 seed Savannah State.

In Sunday’s GSC title game, he Chargers and Blazers exchanged blows much of the game with six total lead changes. UAH held a 47-40 lead at halftime but the Blazers went on a 10-4 run early in the second half to cut UAH’s lead to 51-50. But the Chargers came out with the win going 17-of-21 from the free throw line in the second half.

Blake Campbell earned the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player honor after averaging 20.7 points per game during tournament play along with 6.3 rebounds per game and 6 assists per game.

Daniel Saylor notched a double-double in the win with 14 points with 10 rebounds.

Tommy Murr scored 22 points in the title game, including 12-for-12 from the free throw line.

Matt Thurman and Luke Burnett combined to go 7-for-13 from three point land as Thurman scored 15 points and Burnett put up 13.
