Guntersville’s Randy Jones sworn in as Alabama’s voice on TVA Board of Directors

Randy Jones of Guntersville has officially been sworn in as Alabama’s representative on the Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors, restoring quorum to the nine-member board and giving Alabama a renewed voice in the leadership of the nation’s largest public power utility.

Jones was among four new directors who took the oath of office this week, joining Board Chair Bill Renick and Directors Bobby Klein and Wade White. The additions end a months-long period in which the board lacked enough members to conduct full business.

Jones was nominated by President Donald Trump in July 2025 and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Dec. 18, 2025. His term will run through May 18, 2028. Alabama has just one allocated seat on the TVA board.

“As someone who has lived in Guntersville for over 45 years, I understand the vital role TVA plays in powering our communities, protecting our environment and driving economic opportunity,” Jones said in a statement. “As a Board member, I’ll keep my focus on protecting the ratepayer and advocating for the needs of both rural and urban communities across the region.”

Guntersville Mayor Leigh Dollar said Jones’ appointment is a point of pride for the city and an important moment for Alabama.

“We are incredibly excited to have Randy on the TVA board,” Dollar said. “He is the first person ever from Guntersville to serve in this role, and that is something our community is very proud of. Alabama has not always had representation on the TVA board, so having someone from our area who understands our needs and challenges is a big deal.”

Dollar said TVA’s influence touches nearly every aspect of life in the region.

“TVA impacts our power supply, environmental stewardship and economic development,” she said. “Those three areas are vitally important, and having a local voice at the table who truly understands what is happening on the ground is so important not just for Guntersville, but for all of Alabama.”

Jones brings decades of business and civic experience to the role. He served 17 years on the City of Guntersville Electric Board, including six years as chairman, overseeing a $12.8 million system expansion while maintaining low debt.

He founded a successful insurance agency headquartered in Albertville and has held leadership roles with the Jacksonville State University Board of Directors, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors and the Albertville Rotary Club.

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-Auburn) highlighted Jones’ record of service when introducing him during his Senate confirmation hearing.

“It’s my honor to introduce my good friend and fellow Alabamian, Mr. Randy Jones of Guntersville, Alabama, to represent the state of Alabama on the one seat that we have on the TVA board,” Tuberville said. “Randy is a proud business owner and a civic servant of North Alabama.”

Jones’ appointment comes at a pivotal time for TVA. For much of 2025, the board operated without a quorum after several members were removed, limiting its ability to launch new initiatives or alter the utility’s long-term direction.

With the swearing-in of Jones and fellow directors Art Graham, Mitch Graves and Jeff Hagood, the board is once again able to take full action.

TVA Board Chair Bill Renick said the new directors bring a range of experience critical to the utility’s future.

“They have built businesses, served on the board of their local power companies and understand how TVA operates in a complex, highly regulated environment,” Renick said.

TVA CEO Don Moul echoed that sentiment, pointing to rising energy demand across the Valley.

“As we look at the challenges and opportunities our region faces, I am confident their experience will be an asset to TVA,” Moul said.

Jones’ swearing-in was marked locally as well. Jacksonville State University, where Jones serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees and is an alumnus, congratulated him on the appointment, praising his leadership and service to northeast Alabama. Jones was also formally sworn in inside Guntersville Dam, underscoring his long-standing connection to the region TVA serves.

The TVA Board’s next quarterly meeting is scheduled for February 11 in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.

The Tennessee Valley Authority provides electricity to more than 10 million people across seven southeastern states and operates one of the nation’s most diverse power systems, including nuclear, hydroelectric, coal, natural gas and renewable energy sources.
