Huntsville Animal Services is taking its shelter dogs to the park, giving them a chance to enjoy the outdoors and possibly meet their future families along the way.
The department is partnering with Healthy Huntsville to launch Paws in the Park, a new series of community walks at Hays Nature Preserve and Indian Creek Greenway in November.
Participants can bring their own dogs or walk a shelter dog along a marked, one-mile round-trip route.
The first event is Saturday, Nov. 7, at Hays Nature Preserve, followed by a second walk Saturday, Nov. 14, at Indian Creek Greenway. Both events run from 8 to 11 a.m.
“These walks are about connection – with nature, our parks, our pets, and our community,” said John Fischer, director of Huntsville Animal Services. “Shelter dogs thrive when they get time outdoors, and meeting potential adopters in a calm environment can make all the difference in finding their perfect match.”
The walks also give families considering adoption an opportunity to introduce their current pets to a shelter dog in a neutral outdoor setting.
“We’re thrilled to bring this new series to Huntsville,” said Riley Ferrell, community engagement coordinator for Huntsville Animal Services. “It’s a chance for families to enjoy the trails together while helping our dogs stretch their legs, relax and meet people in a way that feels natural and fun.”
The events are family-friendly, but each group must include at least one adult age 19 or older. Participants who complete the walk will receive a small commemorative gift.
