Huntsville City Hall to close a week after grand opening

HUNTSVILLE – Mayor Tommy Battle mentioned to the crowd gathered to celebrate the opening of the new Huntsville City Hall that doing daily business was moving forward.

“Since we’ve moved in,” Battle said Tuesday, “we’ve already seen increased efficiencies of operations and economic development.”

The sleek, seven-story facility built near the bluff overlooking Big Spring Park East where John Hunt settled into a cabin in 1805 consolidated eight civil departments that were spread out among nearly just as many buildings.

But alas, the new location is shutting down less than a week after its ribbon-cutting ceremony. City Hall and the rest of the City of Huntsville municipal offices will close Monday for Memorial Day. This includes Animal Services, Public Transit (Orbit and Access) and Municipal Court. City offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Holiday service schedules:

  • Garbage Collection: Residential collection will be delayed one day the week of May 27-31. Residents should leave carts at the curb until they are collected.
  • Parks & Recreation: All facilities are closed except splash pads, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Public Safety: Essential police and fire personnel will remain on duty throughout the holiday.

Meanwhile, the Huntsville/Madison County Visitor Center at 500 Church Street and the Visitor Information kiosk inside Huntsville International Airport will both be open regular hours (9 a.m.–5 p.m.) Monday.

CVB offices will close in observance of Memorial Day on Monday and will reopen Tuesday at 8 a.m.
