Huntsville Fire & Rescue seeking spring push for eligible candidates

HUNTSVILLE – Capt. Cory Green, Huntsville Fire & Rescue’s full-time recruiter, made a seductive pitch to individuals seeking to start a career or enter a new one as the city announced its springtime recruiting period.

“For those who step up and answer the call, it’s an incredibly satisfying career where you work makes a difference every day,” Green said during a media event on a balmy Thursday at Fire Station 1. “We’re looking for those individuals eager to be part of a team and meet the challenge every time that call comes in.”

Applications open Tuesday for those seeking to embark on a life-changing career.

“A reliable, qualified fire department is essential to the city’s health and safety,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “When the call comes in, our residents and businesses need and deserve nothing less than the very best to respond. I’m excited to see the next group of candidates step up to the challenge.”

Firefighters also have responsibilities beyond fighting fires. Their work includes prevention and emergency lifesaving and rescue services.

According to a city release, firefighters can take on a variety of positions such as Hazmat Team, Heavy Rescue Team, Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement, Honor Guard/Pipes & Drums or the Training Division. Firefighters also have pathways to advancement for those seeking leadership roles within the department.

“This is not just a job, it’s a calling,” Fire Chief Howard “Mac” McFarlen said. “When we are looking to hire individuals for HFR, we are looking for candidates eager to be part of a team and serve the people of Huntsville who may be facing one of the worst days of their lives.”

Eligible candidates must have no felony convictions, be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.

Starting at $53,726, a cadet’s annual salary jumps to $59,280 when they complete all required training and transition to full-time firefighters. After completing training, firefighters also become eligible for a 5% physical fitness incentive. After a year, employees become eligible for a step pay increase, effective every 12 months on the anniversary of their first date of employment.
