HUNTSVILLE – For nearly 30 years, the Huntsville Hospital Community Health Initiative has supported local health-focused nonprofits and carried on that tradition with recent awards totaling $600,000.
The CHI began issuing grants in 1996 and has donated more than $13.6 million to 53 local agencies since then. For 2024, CHI awarded $600,000 to 10 nonprofit organizations.
Among the recipients are an oldtimer and a newcomer, both in the business of providing healthcare to those in need.
The Community Free Clinic, which provides general and specialized care as well as medication, has received CHI grants for 26 years. Clinica Medica Moscati, which also provides healthcare and services to those in need with an emphasis on the Hispanic community, was awarded its first CHI grant.
Huntsville Hospital CEO Jeff Samz said these were just two places “where people who don’t have any resources at all can get free care.”
2024 recipients:
- The Arc of Madison County – $95,000
- Clinica Medica Moscati – $50,000
- The Community Free Clinic – $100,000
- The Community Free Dental Clinic – $50,000
- HEALS – $25,000
- Kids to Love – $85,000
- New Hope Children’s Clinic – $25,000
- Parkinson’s Dynamics – $85,000
- United Cerebral Palsy – $35,000
- Village of Promise – $50,000
All of these organizations focus on providing services to those who do not have healthcare benefits.
The program’s volunteer committee oversees the initiative. It is named the Jean Wessell Templeton Committee in honor of the long-time chair.
