HUNTSVILLE – The Huntsville Hospital Health System, normally capturing headlines for expansion and rural takeovers to sustain healthcare in those areas, flipped the script with its latest move.
The system is closing its Wellness Center fitness facilities at the Medical Mall at the corner of Memorial Parkway and Governors Drive on July 1. The hospital will use the space for alternative purposes.
“Our community is growing rapidly and we have to make decisions that help us fulfill our core mission, which is to address the need for more patient services,” said Hospital President Tracy Doughty. “Some of the decisions are hard, and in this case, we must repurpose the space in the Med Mall Wellness Center for clinical use. Fortunately, we have two other Wellness Centers that remain available to use in Jones Valley and in Madison.”
The Medical Mall has served as the hub for Huntsville Hospital’s outpatient services for more than two decades. Programs located in the mall include laboratory, imaging, therapy, pharmacy, Center for Lung Health, pre-registration, and physician offices.
Although the exercise and fitness program will cease operations at the Medical Mall, Doughty said programs for patients with Parkinson’s disease, as well as the nutritional and weight loss programs, would continue at the facility.
After July 1, members can use the Wellness facilities in Jones Valley and Madison.
Huntsville Hospital Health System has grown to include hospitals in Huntsville, Madison, Athens, Decatur, Boaz, Guntersville, Fort Payne, Moulton, Red Bay, Sheffield and Scottsboro, as well as Fayetteville, Tenn.
Including hospitals, the system operates 30 facilities and is preparing to open Gateway Medical Clinic at Redstone Gateway outside Gate 9 at Redstone Arsenal.
