HUNTSVILLE – Ensuring the voices of the city’s youth are heard and valued, Huntsville has launched a Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.
According to the city, the council is a dynamic leadership and civic engagement program designed to empower high school students to serve as youth ambassadors, policy advisors and community liaisons.
The initiative is led by the Office of Multicultural Affairs and aims to provide Huntsville’s youth with meaningful opportunities to engage with local government, develop leadership skills and contribute to civic initiatives.
“This Council will ensure the voices of young people are not only heard but truly valued in shaping Huntsville’s future,” said Mayor Tommy Battle. “Our students bring energy, fresh ideas and a desire to serve — all of which are essential to our continued growth as a city.”
Applications for the 2025–2026 academic year will be accepted until 10 p.m. June 20.
The Council is open to high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors who live within the Huntsville city limits and attend public, private or home schools.
Up to 25 students will be selected through a competitive application process that includes written responses, recommendations and interviews. Selected members will serve a one-year term beginning in August, with opportunities for renewal based on performance and participation.
Participants will meet regularly throughout the school year to engage in workshops, community service projects, policy simulations and mentorship opportunities with local leaders.
“This is a rare opportunity for young people to sit at the table and help shape decisions that impact their generation and community,” said Dr. Randy Barbour, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. “We’re looking for passionate students who are ready to lead, listen and learn alongside city officials and peers from across Huntsville.”
