Huntsville offering six-week Civic Engagement Academy

HUNTSVILLE – Have questions about how Alabama’s largest city works? Put down the phone and learn.

Residents who want to know more about city government and its role within the Huntsville community should apply for the Civic Engagement Academy’s spring 2024 session.

Presented by City of Huntsville’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, the CEA is a free, six-week program that aims to empower and educate individuals on community involvement. The program combines both classroom and interactive instruction, providing participants with a comprehensive understanding of civic engagement.

“The Civic Engagement Academy is not just a program; it’s a pathway to creating positive change within our community,” said Kenny Anderson, director of the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. “We invite all eligible individuals who share our passion for community involvement to apply and join us on this transformative journey.”

The spring 2024 session kicks off with orientation on March 5. Classes will be held every Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. Topics are:

  • March 5: How Our City Operates
  • March 19: Our City Growing
  • March 26: Our City Safe, Secure & Responding
  • April 2: Our City at Work at City Hall
  • April 9: Our City Maintaining
  • April 16: Our City Engaging
  • April 23: Our Community Resources
  • April 30: Graduation

The CEA is open to the first 50 applicants who meet eligibility requirements. Applicants must be at least 19 years old and either a resident, business owner or student in Huntsville or the surrounding area. The program is also open to aspiring or established local influencers with a genuine desire to enhance community involvement.

Selected participants are expected to commit to attending at least five out of six classes to successfully graduate from the program. The curriculum covers a range of topics designed to foster civic awareness and engagement, equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to make a positive impact within the community.
