Students, local leaders and community advocates will be recognized next week during the MTM Unsung Hero Scholarship and Community Heroes Celebration, an event aimed at highlighting service, perseverance and achievement across Limestone County.
Hosted by MTM Educational Enrichment, the ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 4, at 6:30 p.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church. The event is free and open to the public.
Organizers say the annual celebration will honor a range of individuals making an impact in their schools and communities, including five MTM Unsung Hero Scholars, six MTM Cup recipients, one Kingdom Agent and 10 Community Unsung Heroes.
Additional recognition will be given to Athens City Council members Frank Travis and Jimmy Wayne Gill, along with honorees Brennan Ashmore, Dymon Lockett and Devin Howell.
The scholarship program focuses on students who demonstrate academic success, leadership and resilience, often while overcoming personal or financial challenges. According to organizers, many recipients are first-generation college students or are balancing school with work and family responsibilities.
“This event is about honoring those who serve quietly, lead faithfully, and persist through adversity,” said Jannifer Matthews. “Our scholars and community heroes reflect the strength and spirit of Athens and Limestone County.”
The program will feature guest speaker Tabeckia Langford, a peer talk by Dalen Smith, and musical performances by JaCobe Hood and his ensemble. Kenny Anderson will serve as master of ceremonies.
The event is presented in partnership with Athens Mayor William R. Marks and community supporters focused on youth development and educational equity.
Organizers say the celebration is designed to bring the community together while recognizing both emerging student leaders and long-standing contributors who often work behind the scenes.
