HUNTSVILLE – It’s not often that kids celebrate going back to school, but the city of Huntsville is planning a big day for them this weekend.
The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Community Awareness for Youth are making sure students start the year off right with the annual Back to School Backpack and School Supply Giveaway.
Set for Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Calhoun Community College’s Huntsville-Research Park campus, a celebration will feature free supplies, live entertainment, community connections and more.
“We want every child in Huntsville to feel confident and excited about the new school year,” said Multicultural Affairs Director Dr. Randy Barbour. “This event is about more than backpacks. It’s about showing our students they’re supported by an entire community that believes in their potential.”
Toni Terrell of “Toni in the Morning” is emcee with DJ Prime Time 256 of WHRP helping to introduce performances by the Huntsville Community Drumline, Lee High School’s N’General band ensemble, Alexander Martial Arts, and special guests.
Students ages 12-18 can grab a free backpack and school supplies while they last, thanks to donations from Stuff the Bus drives.
Families can also connect with local youth services organizations, talk with mentors and explore public safety equipment and vehicles up close with the Huntsville Police Department, Huntsville Fire & Rescue and SWAT.
“A special thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Harry Hobbs for their vision and continued leadership in the community, which has helped shape this event into a meaningful annual tradition for 14 years,” Barbour said.
No registration is required. Supplies are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
