Huntsville police urge safety for New Year’s celebrations

HUNTSVILLE – The Huntsville Police Department isn’t opposed to residents having a blast  on New Year’s Eve, but they don’t want anyone getting blasted.

With the calendar set to turn tomorrow at midnight, HPD reminds residents to celebrate responsibly while also adhering to the city’s fireworks ordinance.

The updated ordinance, amended by the City Council last year, permits the use, sale and purchase of nonexplosive, non-aerial sparkling devices within the city limits.

Ground-based and handheld sparkling devices are allowed but explosive and aerial fireworks are prohibited.

For a safe and peaceful start to 2025 and as a courtesy to neighbors, residents are asked to avoid discharging fireworks after 10 p.m. and follow these simple guidelines:

  • Keep water ready to promptly extinguish stray fireworks;
  • Aim fireworks away from others, pets and structures to prevent injuries and property damage;
  • If a firework fails to ignite, do not attempt to relight it. Douse it with water and dispose of it safely;
  • Never allow children to light fireworks or handle them without adult supervision. Consider safer alternatives like sparklers under close supervision; and
  • Avoid using fireworks under the influence of alcohol.
