Students, faculty and community leaders gathered last week at Oakwood University for an event designed to cultivate and grow immersion in technology and entrepreneurship
The Alabama Collective hosted its Spring 2026 Innovation Power Hour on Thursday, March 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Millet Activity Center on Oakwood’s campus in Huntsville.
Organizers described the program as a fast-paced, interactive experience that introduces students to artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and innovation through workshops and networking with industry professionals.
Innovation Power Hour events are part of a statewide initiative led by The Alabama Collective aimed at expanding opportunities for students at historically Black colleges and universities across Alabama.
The program travels to multiple campuses each year to connect students with mentors and provide hands-on experiences in technology and business development.
During the Oakwood event, students had opportunities to engage with business leaders in the tech field and participate in innovation challenges. The hope is in exploring these pathways, it will lead to STEM careers and startup entrepreneurship.
Charisse Stokes, executive director of The Alabama Collective, has previously said the goal of the program is to give students direct exposure to industries shaping the modern workforce while helping them develop practical skills in innovation and problem solving.
“Our HBCUs are home to some of the brightest, most creative minds,” Stokes said about the event. “This event gives students the tools and exposure to lead in tech and entrepreneurship.”
The event will also feature an “Executive Takeover” segment, where a guest business leader will speak with students about real-world innovation and career development.
“As president of Oakwood University, I am delighted to welcome The Alabama Collective and all participants of the Innovation Power Hour to our campus,” said Oakwood President Dr. Gina Spivey-Brown. “This exciting initiative represents the very spirit of progress, creativity, and collaboration that drives our mission here at Oakwood.”
“The Power Hour’s focus on technology, artificial intelligence, and entrepreneurship provides an extraordinary opportunity for our students, faculty, and staff to explore new ideas, deepen their skills, and connect with industry leaders who are shaping the future,” Spivey-Brown said.
Innovation Power Hour is free and open to Oakwood students, faculty and invited community partners.
Organizers say the event is designed not only to inspire students but also to strengthen Huntsville’s growing innovation ecosystem by connecting young talent with emerging industries in technology and entrepreneurship.
