HUNTSVILLE — The monumental impact of North Alabama is a testament to a distinct quality about the region and many of those who call it home: A combination of dedication to service and the relentless pursuit of solving global challenges with American answers, the Business Council of Alabama says.
“Over the past 39 years, BCA has recognized that North Alabama is not just a leader – but the standard-bearer – in defense, space, cyber and the many industries that intersect to advance the security and strength our nation relies on,” BCA Executive Vice President Clay Scofield said.
“From active duty military and veterans to private sector professionals and small business owners, from startups and laboratories to manufacturing facilities and board rooms – North Alabama is developing the tools, technologies and strategies that make the United States No. 1 in vital areas of our economy and everyday life.”
BCA was a presenting sponsor of the inaugural 256 Today Innovator Awards. Representing companies in North Alabama that are integral to the defense, space, and cyber sectors, BCA said the event was a celebration of the spirit of innovation and dedication that defines North Alabama.
“The companies honored this year by the Innovator Awards turn challenge into opportunity and innovation into strength. It is a privilege to support their efforts on a level of business and government,” Scofield said. “We thank them for their unwavering commitment to our security and prosperity, and for inspiring all of us to continue innovating and pushing forward.”
This year’s Innovator Awards highlighted that spirit of excellence by honoring four recipients.
- Still Serving Veterans (SSV) was recognized as Nonprofit of the Year for its work providing professional support services that empower veterans and their families.
- The Program of the Year award went to Future Technologies and Enabling Plasma Processes, an initiative led by the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Backed by a $40 million investment from the National Science Foundation, FTPP is a 10-member consortium of universities and industry leaders working to transform Alabama’s economy into a model for 21st century innovation.
- Radiance Technologies, a Huntsville-based defense contractor known for its work in cutting-edge space and defense systems, was named Company of the Year. Radiance has played a critical role in advancing capabilities that support U.S. defense initiatives and strengthen the nation’s resilience against emerging threats.
- The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Francisco J. Collazo, who, at 93, continues to inspire with a lifetime dedicated to serving his country. A native of Puerto Rico, Collazo joined the Army during World War II at age 15, driven by a desire to emulate his father, who served in World War I. His decades of service and leadership reflect an enduring commitment to his country and community.
