Intersection improvements to start on Alabama Highway 53

HUNTSVILLE — Work will begin today on $3.2 million in intersection improvements on Alabama 53 in Madison County.

The project, which may take about a year to complete, will add left turn lanes at the junctions with Old Railroad Bed, McKee and Harvest roads. The contractor will install traffic signal poles for upgraded signals at Harvest Road and Old Railroad Bed Road to accommodate the wider intersections and new turn lanes.

The project is funded through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II, a program created by the Rebuild Alabama Act to advance projects of local interest on state routes. The Madison County Commission provided matching funds.

Traffic impacts

The contractor, Rogers Group, does not anticipate lane closures occurring regularly, but they may be implemented at times. Motorists should expect shoulder closures from south of Harvest Road to north of Old Railroad Bed Road. ALDOT asks drivers to observe reduced speed limits in the work zone.

Future widening project

ALDOT is acquiring right-of-way for a project to five-lane part of Alabama 53 just south of the intersection project. The estimated $9 million project will widen about one mile from Taurus Drive to Harvest Road to two travel lanes in each direction with a center turn lane.

ALDOT anticipates letting the project to contract for construction in FY2025.
