Travel lanes on the Interstate 65 Tennessee River bridges are set to return to their original configuration as a major rehabilitation project approaches completion, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.
Lanes on both bridges were shifted roughly two years ago to accommodate work zones for the $23.7 million project, which focused on extending the lifespan of the more than 50-year-old structures.
State officials said the contractor, Cekra Inc., completed a range of upgrades, including cleaning and painting, repairing or replacing structural steel components, addressing sections of the concrete bridge decks and retrofitting bridge rails.
Restriping work began Sunday evening and will restore traffic patterns to their original layout.
The Alabama Department of Transportation said the restriping process is expected to take several nights, weather permitting. Motorists should anticipate single-lane closures from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the work.
Drivers are urged to use caution in the area and remain alert for changing traffic patterns as crews complete the final phase of the project.
Real-time traffic updates are available through the ALGO Traffic app and online at ALGOtraffic.com.
