Governor Kay Ivey has signed a proclamation declaring June 2026 as Strong Families Month in Alabama, highlighting the role families play in supporting children’s development and long-term success.
The proclamation, announced Friday, coincides with Father’s Day later this month and emphasizes the importance of parental involvement and stable home environments.
“Strong families build a strong Alabama,” Ivey said. “Homes led by stable parents, a father and a mother, provide children with the structure and discipline necessary to succeed. In Alabama, we celebrate these hardworking parents that strive for an even better future for their children.”
According to the governor’s office, the proclamation recognizes the contributions of parents in providing guidance, support and stability for children. It also points to U.S. Census Bureau data showing that nearly one-third of Alabama children live in a single-parent or non-married-couple household.
The governor’s office cited research indicating that children raised in stable households are more likely to graduate from high school, achieve economic stability as adults and avoid substance abuse.
State officials also noted that students with engaged parents and stable home environments are generally more likely to attend school regularly, meet academic benchmarks and graduate on time.
The proclamation highlights several state initiatives aimed at supporting children and families, including educational choice programs, early childhood learning investments and efforts to strengthen Alabama’s foster care and child welfare systems.
Among those initiatives is the CHOOSE Act, Alabama’s education savings account program, which expands educational options for eligible families.
The governor’s office also noted Alabama’s participation in First Lady Melania Trump’s “A Home for Every Child” initiative, which seeks to increase awareness of adoption and foster care opportunities.
Ivey said the observance is intended to recognize the importance of family stability and parental involvement in helping children succeed and strengthening communities across the state.
