HUNTSVILLE – Calling for a need for “a lot of basic things,” Kim Caudle Lewis kicked of her campaign for Huntsville’s City Council District 5 seat Monday.
“I think I can do a better job of representing District 5,” said Caudle Lewis, who announced her candidacy this month. “The district has changed a lot. The demographics have changed, the landscape has changed, and I think a lot of the relationships that I already have in place will make it even better and easier for me to be able to represent District 5.”
Caudle Lewis is seeking to unseat Councilman John Meredith, who was elected in 2021. She said Monday the biggest challenges facing the district are infrastructure needs.
“The infrastructure is not in place,” she said. ‘A lot of basic things are needed. There’s only three schools in our district and this is the largest district in all of the city of Huntsville.
“We need to figure out a way to partner with the school systems to get that worked out.”
In addition to schools, there are additional infrastructure needs in District 5 according to Caudle Lewis.
“There’s very little resources as far as fire departments or as police departments, all those resources are not out into the western portion of the city and that district is spread that far. So we need to make sure we’re looking at all aspects,” she said.
District 5 encompasses west Huntsville and stretches into Limestone County.
Regarding many of the ambitious projects announced in the city within the past year, Caudle Lewis said she would like to see more basic needs addressed in the district.
“I think many of these things are good for the city, but they’re not addressing some of the basic things that are needed,” she said. “We shouldn’t lose sight of the basic needs of the people that live within the entire district.”
Attorney JoAnn Perez said she lives in District 5 and is excited about Caudle Lewis’s campaign.
“Kim gets things done,” said Perez. ‘She does what she says she’s going to do. And we need someone like that in our district.
“I live in the district so I’m very excited to have her represent me.”
After pausing to greet more friends and supporters, Caudle Lewis added a final thought.
“I want the person that represents District 5 to be actually working for all people in District 5, and I think that I can do a great job of representing the entire district,” she said.
