Lands shares her abortion story in campaign video

HUNTSVILLE — The Marilyn Lands campaign is taking on the state’s abortion ban and using the candidate’s personal experience.

In a video released this morning, the Alabama House District 10 Democratic candidate describes the danger of Alabama’s no exceptions abortion bans. The video can be seen here.

Lands shares how overjoyed she was 20 years ago to have a second child, the campaign said in a statement. However, the campaign said, the excitement turned to dread during the pregnancy when she learned the baby had a severe genetic condition and would not survive.

Facing “the hardest decision of her life,” Lands recounts how her doctors advised she terminate the pregnancy. The doctors told Lands her health was “at risk because these babies often don’t even survive to birth and can die in utero.”

The video also features Alyssa Gonzales of North Alabama, who discovered her second child had a catastrophic genetic abnormality in 2022.

Unlike Lands, Gonzales was unable to terminate her pregnancy in Alabama because of the state’s ban. She had to travel more than 500 miles to receive the care she needed, even with her own life at risk, Lands’ campaign said.

“These stories highlight the dire consequences of  Alabama’s no exceptions abortion ban,” the campaign said. “This ban has put women’s lives at risk and taken away important freedoms from Alabama families.”

Last September, Gov. Kay Ivey called a special election for State House District 10 after then-Rep. David Cole (R-Madison) resigned after pleading guilty to felony voter fraud. The special election is March 26.
