Limestone County EMA says roads, bridges impassable

ATHENS — As the temperatures fall and snow, freezing rain and sleet continue, Limestone County roads and bridges have been deemed impassable until further notice, the Limestone County Emergency Management Agency announced. Travel should be limited or suspended, the EMA said in a statement.

Meanwhile, conditions in the Tennessee Valley continue to deteriorate in the wake of the wintry mix moving through the area.

The National Weather Service Huntsville office issued a message advising motorists to “use extreme caution.”

“Use extreme caution when driving during or after sleet,” the office said. “Reduce speed, allow plenty of stopping distance, and do not use cruise control.”

Cities and counties across North Alabama are closing offices and schools Tuesday due to the hazardous weather in the forecast.

The Alabama Department of Transportation monitors state and federal highways including U.S. 231, U.S. 431, U.S. 72, Alabama 20, Alabama 67, and I-565. To see real-time road conditions, visit algotraffic.com.
