HUNTSVILLE — Two Republican candidates for Alabama House District 20 will face off in a runoff on June 21. James Lomax received 43.9% of the vote in the May 24 primary, followed by Frances Taylor’s 26.1%. Primary candidates James D. Brown and Angela McClure failed to reach the runoff.
The House District 20 race is one of a handful of races in Alabama that is decided prior to the November 8 general election, as there is no Democratic candidate vying for the position.
After garnering 3,754 votes to Taylor’s 2,229 in the primary, Lomax is the front runner heading into the run-off. The “lifelong conservative Republican” currently serves as the director of Asset Management & Leasing for a real estate investment trust in Huntsville.
“I help assemble multi-million-dollar deals and help grow Redstone Arsenal. I’m running because I feel we need more conservative people who understand business involved in the process of crafting our laws,” stated Lomax. “We’re very excited that Lieutenant Governor Will Ainsworth agrees and has endorsed us in this race.”
As for the upcoming runoff, Lomax said their message was reaching voters.
“Our message of fresh conservative leadership is resonating with voters, as evidenced by our 44% of the vote share in a four-way primary in May. While a runoff creates a new wrinkle, we are working hard to get our voters back out and meet new voters,” stated Lomax. “I have a young daughter – I’m running to protect her future and the future of all the children of District 20.”
Meanwhile, Taylor told 256 Today she felt confident heading into the runoff.
“I feel pretty good, I’m encouraged after meeting with so many constituents that my values align with what they see and want in a public servant,” she advised.
Taylor touted her years of experience in leadership roles both in work and service organizations, “I am currently the Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind and was the first person to have been elected to chair the Alabama Republican Party Ethics Committee.”
“I have a proven record of serving individuals both in work and private life,” Taylor stated.
House District 20 voters will decide their next representative June 21, 2022.
Primarily located in South Huntsville, House District 20 is one of the state’s more geographically compact districts while still containing more than 45,000 residents.
