Madison City Schools introduces weapons detection K9 to enhance campus safety

MADISON – Madison City Schools has welcomed a new four-legged member to its safety team.

Gemini, a black Labrador trained in advanced weapons detection, is now rotating among the district’s middle and high schools to provide an added layer of security.

Working alongside Madison Police Officer John Kern, Gemini is trained to detect airborne odors from concealed firearms, explosives, and ammunition.

Unlike traditional detection dogs that must locate a specific object, Gemini can trace the scent trail, or vapor wake, left behind as a person moves, giving her the ability to identify potential threats in real time, even in large and crowded settings.

“Madison City Schools is pleased to have Gemini as an added layer of security on our campuses,” said Jamie Golliver, coordinator of Safety and Security for Madison City Schools. “In partnership with Madison City Police, we continuously look for ways to enhance the safety of our buildings and protection of our students, faculty and visitors.”

Golliver said the district worked closely with the Madison Police Department to establish the program and ensure it fit into existing security efforts.

“Gemini, while maybe you won’t know where she is and when at a given time, she is working every single day that school is in session,” said Golliver. “Gemini comes highly trained to detect weapons, ammunition and residue whether stationary or in motion, and whether concealed on individuals or hidden somewhere on the school campus.”

Gemini and Kern will be on a rotating schedule among Journey, Discovery, and Liberty middle schools as well as James Clemens and Bob Jones high schools.

District leaders said the initiative reflects an ongoing commitment to student and staff security.
