Madison election update: Four city council seats unopposed

MADISON – Qualifying for municipal elections in Alabama has ended and, in Madison, that leaves four city council candidates unopposed.

In District 1, incumbent Maura Wroblewski is the only candidate who qualified in her race, while newcomers David Bier in District 2, Billie Goodson in District 3, and Alice Lessmann in District 5 are also unopposed.

According to the Alabama Secretary of State’s office, a certificate of election will be issued to unopposed, qualified candidates.

“At its first regular meeting after receiving the mayor or other chief executive officer’s statement the governing body of the municipality shall adopt a resolution declaring the individual named in the statement duly elected to the office described in the statement and shall issue a certificate of election for the individual,” the statement said.

Madison’s next city council meeting is July 14.

Madison’s three remaining city council districts and mayor’s race will have two or more qualified candidates on the Aug. 26.

In District 4, City Councilman Greg Shaw is not seeking reelection. Michael McKay and Rachel Homolak have qualifiedfor the seat.

In District 6, incumbent Karen Denzine is running against Scott Harbour and Erica White.

In District 7, City Council President John Seifert is facing Kenneth Jackson.

The Madison mayor’s race will see three names on the ballot: City Council member Ranae Bartlett, City Administrator Steve Smith and Margi Daly.

Mayor Paul Finley announced last October he would not be seeking reelection.

Secretary of State Wes Allen reminds voters of the importance of participating in municipal elections.

“The right of eligible United States citizens to cast a ballot in a fair and secure election is one of the hallmarks of our constitutional republic,” he said. “I would encourage all eligible Alabamians to exercise that right on August 26.”
