Marshall in the lead…for now? Tuberville building support; Army celebrates 250th birthday; and more …

Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in Alabama

Marshall and everyone else

While Attorney General Steve Marshall is leading the pack in the upcoming U.S. Senate election, the field is far from decided.  Some of the recent names popping up include Rep. Barry Moore, former congressional candidate Caroleene Dobson, Auburn Basketball Coach Bruce Pearl, Yellowhammer News founder Cliff Sims and former U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks. Moore is said to still be considering, Pearl is likely already out because of a campaign donation to Shomari Figures, and Sims “might just be having fun,” according to an insider.  Meanwhile, Dobson withdrew her name from consideration to fill the Public Service Commission presidency this week leading many to speculate her future plans. As far as Brooks, while he remains undecided it is understood that in the absence of a Moore for Senate campaign, there very well could be a Brooks for Senate campaign. The party primary election for the open U.S. Senate seat will be held May 19, 2026.

Tuberville $$$

Reports filed with the Alabama Secretary of State’s office shows Sen. Tommy Tuberville raised over $3 million for his campaign for governor during the final days of May. How much of that was from North Alabama? Well, reports show that Tuberville’s largest donor was local homebuilder and Town Madison/Clift Farm developer Louis Breland. Breland gave $100,000 personally and another $100,000 from Breland Homes. Local politicos say Breland also hosted an event in his home last week that raised over $700,000 for the Tuberville campaign from a list of donors across Limestone and Madison counties.

Robertson vs Mitchell

Katherine Robertson, longtime chief counsel to Attorney General Steve Marshall, is expected to officially announce her run for attorney general next week. Robertson’s coming announcement follows former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Jay Mitchell’s campaign launch on Monday for the AG spot. The race will likely divide loyalties among core republican groups. “It might just come down to who the voters like better,” said one observer.

250th Birthday Bash

It’s a big one y’all. It’s the Army’s 250th birthday and Huntsville is celebrating in a big way.  Two weeks of events are underway including tomorrow’s giant party at Redstone Gateway featuring the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team, music and fireworks. The family-friendly event is free to attend and kicks off at 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. outside Gate 9 on Research Park Boulevard.
