McMasters announces re-election campaign for Decatur City Council

DECATUR — Playing a pivotal role in Decatur’s growth as a city councilman, Carlton McMasters is seeking re-election to the District 3 seat.

“Serving not only the residents of district 3, but all of the citizens in Decatur these last four and a half years has been one of the greatest honors of my life,” he said in a statement. “Five years ago, I promised to provide positive leadership that would create an environment ripe for growth with open lines of communication. The last four and a half years we’ve seen numerous quality of life projects – a renewed emphasis on recreational amenities such as the new rec center and sportsplex, new parks in District 3, and record amounts of road resurfacing.

“Another major accomplishment is the work with Decatur Utilities to address sanitary sewer overflows that had been plaguing the city for years. We’ve also experienced residential and commercial growth I’m proud of, including industry expansions that have led to quality, high paying jobs. But there is still more to accomplish.”

The first term saw McMasters supporting infrastructure and safety improvements including the realignment of Highway 67 and Upper River Road, causeway lighting and efforts for a third bridge. Fostering relationships with members of our state and federal delegation have ensured tax dollars have been returned to Decatur for future investments.

“The first 2 1/2 years, I was thrilled with Decatur’s progress, from residential and commercial investment to quality-of-life improvements,” he said. “While those have continued to take place, we’ve also had our struggles. The next four years will see a new mayor, new police chief and several new council members.

“I am committed to continuing to provide the knowledge and leadership that comes from experience in helping Decatur navigate these next four years.”

Carlton, a lifelong resident of District 3, is a graduate of Decatur High School and Auburn University. He and his wife of 20 years, Jennie-Marie, have four daughters, Emma Hensley, Mary-Reed, Lily and Margaret who all attend Decatur City Schools. They are members of Decatur Methodist Church.

Carlton works with his father at their 72-year-old family business, J&M Signs. In addition to small business experience, Carlton has served his community on numerous boards and committees. He is a former vice president of the Decatur Jaycees and past Riverfest Chair.

He is a graduate of the 2009 Excellence in Leadership Class through the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce, where he formerly served on the board of directors. He is also a former board member of the Salvation Army and One Decatur Steering Committee. Carlton is a 2024 graduate of Leadership Alabama.

The municipal elections are Aug. 26.
