Off The Record: The latest rumors and rumblings in North Alabama
As we step into 2025, the new year brings a chance for a fresh start and new goals. Like many of us, Alabama’s elected officials are setting their resolutions. And like last year, we asked some of our favorite leaders to share with us what they’ll be focusing on in 2025.
“As North Alabama’s economic driver, a priority for Huntsville in 2025 is to get Montgomery’s attention on our major road priorities, such as critical improvements to the intersection of I-565 and Memorial Parkway and the eastern extension of I-565.” – Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle
“My goals for 2025 are to focus on deepening my faith in Jesus, focusing more intently on relationships with family & friends and to always count my blessings.” – Secretary of State Wes Allen
“To make the overtime tax cut permanent. I am committed to making this a permanent cut for the people of Alabama.” – House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels
“I resolve to read through the Bible in 2025 and get home from the Capitol early enough to see my wife and play with my girls (age 3 and 1)!” – State Auditor Andrew Sorrell
“I failed miserably at slowing down in 2024. So I’m doubling down and resolving to slow down and quit living a life of blur.” -State Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur)
“Well, turning 65 in 2024, and challenging my sons to run the Cotton Row 10k was a big success, even the grandkids joined in for the 5k race. So, 2025 will stay the course with a personal resolution to do the same! My business resolution will be to work with colleagues to continue a strong Alabama and ensure we continue workforce readiness.” –State Rep. Rex Reynolds (R-Huntsville)
“In 2025, I vow to survive not one, but TWO of my children’s weddings without crying too much, dancing too embarrassingly, or saying anything in the toast that will haunt them forever. Here’s to love, laughter, family, and hoping I don’t lose my mind before the second ‘I do’ , but I wouldn’t ‘bet’ on it!” – State Rep. Andy Whitt (R-Harvest)
“My resolution in 2025 is to not allow goals for the future to eschew living the life that is in front of me. I work for a brighter future for everyone in Alabama, but I hope we can all appreciate the living moment of the now, that is gone in a whisper, stolen away by the past.” – State Rep. James Lomax (R-Huntsville)
“In 2025, I plan to approach my first session as a state representative with optimism, energy and enthusiasm and to enjoy the 117 miles on Interstate 65 of my commute to Montgomery.” -State Rep. Jeana Ross (R-Guntersville)
“During 2024, I was constantly on the go. In 2025, I am going to slow down and smell the coffee … LITERALLY. Huntsville is growing by leaps and bounds, and I want to experience it all. I’ve made a list of new coffee shops, restaurants, markets, and boutiques. By the end of the year, I suspect I’ll have a few new favorite spots to frequent.” –Madison County Commissioner Violet Edwards
“In 2025, I’ll work to continue moving Decatur forward in the final year of this term, guided by my principles of faith, family, and community. I’ll focus on bringing our community together, supporting our city, growing professionally, and appreciating this time of service while preparing for the next opportunity to serve. Along the way, I’ll also take time to enjoy more moments with friends and family.” – Decatur City Councilman Kyle Dukes Pike
“As we step into 2025, I’m reminded of the importance of setting intentions that align with the calling and responsibilities God has placed on my life. This year, my resolution is simple yet profound: to be faithful.
“Faithful to God, as I seek to serve Him with my whole heart and live out His will in my life. Faithful to my wife and family, the greatest blessings and responsibilities I have been entrusted with. Faithful to my role as a servant-leader in my elected position, working diligently to honor the trust placed in me and serve the people of District 25 with integrity.
“I approach this new year with gratitude, humility, and determination. I ask for your prayers as I strive to grow in these areas and for all of us to embrace the opportunities God has in store for 2025.” – State Rep. Phillip Rigsby (R-Monrovia)
