DECATUR — The drive to the beach and back from North Alabama may take a little more longer for motorists on I-65.
A $16.1 million project project to resurface the interstate through Morgan County is scheduled to begin next week.
Starting 6 p.m. Monday, weather permitting, crews with contractor Rogers Group will resurface the 23.4 miles of interstate from Hurricane Creek, north of Vinemont in Cullman County, to one mile south of the I-565 interchange (Exit 340) in Limestone County.
The work will be done in two main phases: First, the segment south of Alabama Highway 36 in Hartselle will be resurfaced this year. The segment north of Highway 36 will follow in 2026.
To reduce traffic impacts, most work requiring lane closures will take place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays. ALDOT advises motorists to expect delays due to single-lane closures.
Initial milling and paving operations will begin north of Lacon (Exit 318) in southern Morgan County.

This month, the contractor will begin repairing and raising the bridge on Upper River Road over I-65 in Priceville. The bridge was damaged in late April when struck by a piece of equipment improperly loaded on a trailer. ALDOT plans to have the bridge repair performed as a supplement to the original contract.
The project also includes raising the bridge on Parker Road over I-65 in Hartselle.
ALDOT will announce further details about the plans and scheduling for the bridge repair and bridge raisings.
