North Alabama receives more than $800,000 in ADECA assistance

MONTGOMERY— Several community service agencies will share nearly $835,000 to help low-income families in North Alabama with home energy costs during the winter months.

Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs announced the grants Monday. They were made available by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

“As we enter the coldest months of the year, many low-income residents find themselves in even tougher situations and may struggle to afford higher heating bills along with other needs,” said Ivey. “These grants provide additional funding to assist in lowering the costs for many of them.”

The agencies are:

  • The Community Action Partnership of Huntsville-Madison and Limestone counties will manage funds for Madison and Limestone counties in the amount of $190,530.
  • The Community Action Agency of Northwest Alabama will manage funds for Colbert, Franklin and Lauderdale counties in the amount of $66,305.
  • The Communication Action Partnership of North Alabama will manage funds for Cullman, Lawrence, Marion, Morgan and Winston counties in the amount of $150,545.
  • The Community Action Agency of Northeast Alabama will manage funds for Blount, Cherokee, DeKalb, Jackson, Jefferson, Marshall and St. Clair counties in the amount of $427,282.

“ADECA joins Gov. Ivey in supporting those who need it most during this time of need,” said ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell. “Our partnerships with local community agencies ensure that many who truly need assistance receive help with heating their homes during the coldest months of the year.”

These grants are supplemental to grant funds of $63 million awarded this year through the state’s yearly Low-Income Home Energy Assistance allocation and are part of a statewide program that includes 18 community agencies totaling $2.58 million.
