Operation Christmas Cleanup to collect live trees, other items for disposal

HUNTSVILLE – As the holiday season ends and it’s time to ditch that live tree, the city of Huntsville wants to help take it off your hands.

The city’s Green Team and Parks & Recreation Department are participating in Operation Christmas Cleanup, a joint effort with the City of Madison, Madison County Commission, Solid Waste Disposal Authority (SWDA) and Recycling Alliance of North Alabama (RANA).

Live trees will be accepted along with flattened cardboard boxes, batteries, inkjet cartridges and electronics in John Hunt Park at 2315 Airport Road on Jan. 18 from 8-11 a.m. Trees will be converted into mulch and used in public areas throughout the city.

The drop-off location in Madison is at Madison City Schools Stadium at 211 Celtic Drive.

Items not accepted include artificial trees, lights, ornaments, Styrofoam, packing materials, plastics bags or wrapping paper.

More than 750 trees, 500 pounds in batteries and 19,000 pounds in electronics were dropped off last year.
