Para-cyclists hitting the streets in Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE — The world is coming to Huntsville.

That is, the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup.

Athletes from 40 countries will be on the streets for the event this weekend in Cummings Research Park.

Though the competition doesn’t start until Friday, they will be training on local roads this week. The competitors will be on two-wheeled bikes and tall tricycles, and others are on handcycles that are very low to the ground.

Motorists are urged to be alert and aware of your surroundings, as always. These athletes have come a long way to compete in the Rocket City.

Crews are working to build the start/finish area for the races. Explorer Boulevard will be closed Wednesday from Moquin Drive to Farrow Road – near Columbia High School.

The races are Friday through Memorial Day in Cummings Research Park West. There is no charge for admission.
