To help protect those in need during the coldest months, Huntsville Utilities supports the community through Project Share. This vital program assists elderly individuals, low-income families, and those with disabilities by helping cover utility bills, improving energy efficiency, and providing long-term solutions to reduce the risks of winter-related health issues.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, older adults are particularly susceptible to hypothermia. Hypothermia can be a serious medical emergency, occurring when the body loses heat faster than it can generate it. Hypothermia can occur even with relatively mild exposure to cold or small drops in temperature. To combat this, Project Share has been helping since its inception in 1988, ensuring vulnerable residents maintain warmth and safety during the colder months.
A Lifeline for Vulnerable Households
Project Share was established to provide financial relief for elderly, low income, and disabled individuals struggling to pay their utility bills during winter. One hundred percent of the funds raised through the program go directly to individuals in need. In addition to covering utility bills, 30% of the donations fund energy efficiency improvements, helping families save money long term.
Since its launch, Project Share has supported over 30,000 families, raising more than $5.5 million in community contributions. Last winter (January-March 2023), the program helped 667 families pay their utility bills, distributing $147,968.93 in total assistance, which averaged $221.84 per family.
Who Is Eligible for Assistance?
- Seniors aged 62 and older
- Individuals certified as disabled or handicapped
Eligibility for assistance also includes income limitations based on the guidelines set by the Alabama Department of Human Resources for low or fixed-income households. The Salvation Army handles the application process, screening applicants, and determining who qualifies for help.
Energy Efficiency Improvements: A Long-Term Solution
In addition to utility bill assistance, 30% of Project Share donations are allocated toward home energy improvements that reduce future utility costs. These improvements are targeted at very low-income residents of Madison County, and the funds are supplemented by HUD criteria and other grant contributions.
