Randy Owen urges voters to support state parks with a ‘Yes’ vote on Amendment 1

Alabama’s favorite son, Randy Owen, is urging Alabama voters to vote “Yes” on Amendment 1 on the May 24 ballot.

Best known as the lead singer of the band Alabama, Owen said voting yes on Amendment 1 signals support for outdoor recreation.  If Amendment 1 is approved the state would be able to borrow $85 million to repair and expand infrastructure and amenities at Alabama’s state parks and historical sites.

In a 30-second video, the Fort Payne native said Amendment 1 will help maintain and expand the state parks system “from DeSoto State Park on Lookout Mountain to Gulf State Park on the coast.”

Owens said, “State parks are one of the many reasons I’m glad my home’s in Alabama. Hope you will join me in voting yes for our state parks on May 24.”

The video, produced by the Alabama State Parks system, is part of a “Support the State Parks” campaign to educate voters on investing in the park system.

“Whether it was camping, hiking or biking at an Alabama state park, a shared connection to the landscape has kept Alabamians resilient over the past few years,” he said. “Approval of the State Parks Amendment during the primary election on May 24 will make possible continued renovations and improvements at Alabama’s State Parks. This new bond measure addresses necessary park renovations that are prioritized to best serve the needs of park guests, including new services and amenities that modernize Alabama’s state parks while preserving their historic charm.

“Investing in Alabama’s outdoor recreation infrastructure has the potential to make the state a premier tourism destination. The State Parks Amendment will help build a better future for Alabama State Parks and all Alabamians.”

Alabama State Parks have also released a FAQ sheet on the State Parks Amendment, how the ballot language read, where the money comes from and how the money will be spent.

The Alabama State Parks System is a division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Also this week, Majority Leader Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville, a co-sponsor of the proposal, voiced his support for Amendment 1, telling 256 Today, “Our state is blessed, the parks are a jewel in Alabama, and this will revitalize these places and help bring more tourism in.”
