HUNTSVILLE — A new road expansion project will provide Redstone Arsenal employees with a faster option to get on base in the mornings.
The Resolute Way Interchange will specifically help to speed things up for commuters on I-565 heading to the arsenal. The project is being made possible by a collaborative effort between the Alabama Department of Transportation, the City of Huntsville, and the Federal Highway Administration.
At the Redstone Arsenal Update on Wednesday, officials from the base provided info about the plan for construction and the skyrocketing number of commuters necessitating the project.
“Resolute Way is an endeavor between the city and the Arsenal where we’re taking basically the intersection just to the south of where Cabela’s is there at 565,” said Martin Traylor, Deputy to the Garrison Commander at Redstone. “We’re going to create another off-ramp from 565 that would be a high-speed approach from 565 there, Cabela’s, all the way down to basically Gate 9.”
He said a sharp spike in gate traffic, exceeding pre-Covid numbers, prompted the project.
“That’ll relieve a lot of the traffic on 565 and on (Research Park Boulevard) coming down there and hopefully help get people onto the arsenal faster,” Traylor said. “The gate traffic on the arsenal has become significant.
“We’re back to almost full occupancy now.”
Traylor did offer a suggestion for those commuting in the mornings while the construction on Resolute Way takes place.
“So what we’re trying to make the community understand is get an audiobook, bring coffee, and relax,” he said. “It’s not that we’re not trying. It’s just you can’t get 50,000 people through a gate in four lanes in a quick time in the morning. Just bear with us. We will get there.”
Construction on Resolute Way is expected to start in 2026.
