A $1.9 million road improvement project along U.S. 31 in Morgan County is set to begin today, bringing temporary closures and detours as crews complete safety upgrades and resurfacing work. The project to improve US-31 at Lacon in Morgan County will divert traffic to I-65.

According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, the project includes safety widening, concrete slab repairs and replacements, and paving an asphalt overlay. The project extends from the Cullman County line to Lacon Road.

The two-lane segment of US-31 north of I-65 Exit 318 to south of Lacon Trade Day will close to traffic Monday, May 4.

Northbound traffic will detour to I-65 at Exit 318 and southbound traffic will detour to I-65 at Exit 322 (CR-55) in Falkville. Message boards and other signs will advise drivers of the closure and direct them to the detour route.

Additionally, Higdon Road, a local road, will close at its intersection with US-31. On its other end, at Old Highway 31, it will remain open to local traffic but closed to through traffic.

Single-lane closures and lane shifts are expected in the divided highway segments of the work zone north and south of the road closure. Please expect delays and plan additional travel time.

ALDOT anticipates completion of the project in mid- to late summer.
