Rocket City celebrating Earth Month in April with two Green Team events

HUNTSVILLE – As the colors of winter continue to give way to a new season and the transformation signaling new beginnings, the Huntsville Green Team is springing into action.

April is Earth Month, and the Green Team is celebrating with two events.

The annual Spring Plant & Cleanup Supply Giveaway is Friday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at John Hunt Park in the parking lot of the Jaycee Building at 2200 Jaycee Way. Residents can drive through and pick up free tomato and cucumber plants as well as free garbage bags for litter collection.

On April 20, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., the city will observe Earth Day during a free celebration at Hays Nature Preserve on U.S. 431 in Owens Cross Roads. Enjoy earth-friendly exhibitors with informative and interactive displays, Southeastern Raptor Center demonstrations, live music from Alli and Christy, vegetable plant giveaway, face painting, concessions and more.

Parking is limited at Hays Nature Preserve, but parking is available at nearby Mark Russell Recreational Center, 429 Taylor Road. Huntsville Transit will provide shuttle transportation between the recreation center and the nature preserve.

“Earth Month is always a special time of year for Green Team, which finds its passion in taking care of the environment and making Huntsville look beautiful,” Director of Landscape Management Brian Walker said. “We hope residents will join us at these events as we take a moment to appreciate the world around us.”
