Foundation, Publix present Tools for Back-to-School funds to school systems

HUNTSVILLE –  A trio of North Alabama school systems are thousands of dollars richer thanks to the Publix Tools for Back-to-School register campaign and The Schools Foundation.

At a ceremony Tuesday in Mt. Carmel Elementary School, Publix and The Schools Foundation presented Madison County Schools Superintendent Allen Perkins with a check for more than $34,780 to be used in support of his district.

The funds were part of the monies raised during the campaign, which ran July 20-31, at 14 Publix Super Markets in Madison County. Customers and Publix associates donated nearly $94,000 during the 14-day event.

With Tuesday’s check presentation to Madison County Schools, Publix and The Schools Foundation will have distributed more than $96,000 to Huntsville City ($40,000), Madison City ($21,566), and Madison County Schools. School officials said that they will use the funds for high school robotics, STEM supply needs, the GreenPower racing program, and outdoor classrooms.

“Our Tools for Back-to-School program grew out of the need to help students and teachers,” said Brenda Reid, Publix community relations manager. “Many families do not have the resources to purchase school supplies, and many teachers spend their own money to buy supplies for their students.

“That is why this program is so important.”

In addition, the Tegna Foundation awarded a grant to The Schools Foundation to match the first $2,500 coming into the campaign.

Established in 2000, The Schools Foundation supports Huntsville, Madison, and Madison County public schools through programming, funding, and advocacy for principals, teachers, and students.

Representing more than 55,000 students, TSF’s vision is to be recognized statewide as a driving force for excellence in public education that helps create world-class schools in Huntsville City, Madison City, and Madison County Schools.
