Scottsboro, Decatur, South Huntsville cited for excellence by Main Street Alabama

 

OPELIKA — A trio of area communities were honored by Main Street Alabama with Awards of Excellence. Scottsboro, Decatur and South Huntsville received their awards at the organization’s conference last week in Opelika.

Scottsboro captured awards for planning & public space, promotion, preservation, and Main Street Hero. Decatur was recognized for building design, historic rehabilitation, and the Main Street Hero. South Huntsville won for business promotion and Main Street Hero.

Main Street Scottsboro won three awards for its efforts to revitalize Downtown Scottsboro; the Scottsboro City Council also won the Main Street Hero Award for its support of the Main Street Scottsboro program.

“We truly appreciate everyone’s support on all of our projects and we can’t wait to show you what else we can do to make Downtown Scottsboro an even better place,” said Main Street Scottsboro Executive Director Katie Kirkland.

The Main Street Scottsboro Board received awards in the following categories: Excellence in Promotion- Scottsboro Trade Days; Excellence in Planning & Public Space- Downtown Square Lighting Project; Excellence in Preservation- Downtown Historic Photo Trail; and Hero Award- Scottsboro City Council

“Everything we do as Main Street Scottsboro is for our community; we want the people of Scottsboro to be proud of their town and to be invested in its revitalization, and it is so rewarding to be recognized for our efforts by Main Street Alabama,” said Kirkland. “Our organization is so proud of the projects we have done over the past year and we want to continue to make our downtown a place everyone loves.

“We hope to build on this momentum and do even better things in the future.”

“Proud is an understatement. These downtown champions won big last night at the Main Street Alabama Awards of Excellence Banquet in Opelika,” the organization posted. “Congratulations – we are proud that you are part of Downtown Decatur.”

The awards for Decatur were for Main Street Hero – Dede Parker Quarry; Excellence in Building Design (non-historic) – The Studio on Bank; and Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation – Girl Scout Little House at Delano Park Conservancy.

South Huntsville Main received an Award for Excellence in Business Promotion for the Spring Progressive Dinner and its Main Street Hero is Madison County Commissioner Phil Riddick.

“South Huntsville Main is grateful to be recognized at this year’s Main Street Alabama awards banquet,” said Katie Patterson, executive director South Huntsville Main Business Association. “In working to bring more business to South Huntsville, we value the guidance and support from the Main Street team. It’s exciting to be a part of an organization making such an impact in our state.”

The progressive dinner highlights the food scene in South Huntsville with a trolley that takes participants from appetizer to dessert at different restaurants throughout the area.

The Progressive Dinners take place twice a year, with the next one coming up in October.
