A salute to the military set for Armed Forces Week

HUNTSVILLE – Respect and appreciation for the Armed Forces is part of Huntsville’s DNA.

Scheduled for the week of June 25-July 1, the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber is hosting a series of events as its Armed Forces Celebration.

Redstone Arsenal is home to the four-star Army Materiel Command and a dozen other Army commands and offices, as well as the headquarters for the Missile Defense Agency and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

From the Army, which plays such an important role in the local economy and infrastructure, to the numerous veterans and their families who have made so many sacrifices for our freedom, more than 43,000 people work on Redstone Arsenal, and more than $50 billion in federal budgets are managed there.

So yes, Huntsville makes a big bang of celebrating our Armed Forces!

In addition to the formal events below, local attractions will offer free or discounted admissions for military families.

The week kicks off on June 26 with a Proclamation Signing Ceremony at 8 a.m. by Mayor Tommy Battle at the Veterans Memorial in downtown Huntsville. In the event of rain, the proclamation will be held at the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber at 225 Church Street.

At 6:30 p.m., the Armed Forces Concert joins with the Concerts in the Park in Big Spring Park to feature the Maneuver Center of Excellence Band from Fort Benning, Ga., followed by spectacular fireworks.

On June 27, it’s time to play ball with the annual softball game between Team Redstone and the community leaders from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at Toyota Field. Admission and parking are free; gates open at 5 p.m. and first pitch at 5:30 p.m.
