Severe weather is forecast for Friday-Saturday … no foolin’

HUNTSVILLE — March came in like a lion but it’s hardly going out like a lamb.

In fact, the National Weather Service Huntsville office is forecasting storms with high winds Friday similar to last week’s severe weather.

“A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected to sweep eastward through the Tennessee Valley late Friday evening through early Saturday morning,” the office said today. “Damaging winds and tornadoes are the main threats (especially for northwest Alabama). Locally heavy rainfall and hail are secondary threats with this line of storms.”

The office said a line of strong to severe storms will move ahead of a cold front and cross into northwest Alabama around 11 p.m. Friday. The thunderstorm threat will quickly come to an end Saturday morning following the passage of the cold front to the east.

Some storms may even form earlier Friday, bringing high winds and heavy rain.

“Heavy rainfall is expected with storms Friday afternoon through Saturday morning,” forecasters said. ” … locally higher amounts will be possible, especially if the system slows down as it moves eastward.

Sustained non-thunderstorm winds in the 25-30 mph range are expected Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, with gusts of 45-50 mph possible at times.”
