Shop Local-Opoly benefits Huntsville, Madison County businesses, shoppers

HUNTSVILLE – One of the most popular game boards ever is again lending its form to a holiday shopping initiative by the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber – the return of Shop Local-Opoly.

The idea encourages the community to support area businesses between now and Dec. 1. Residents keeping shopping dollars local will be entered in a drawing to win up to $650 worth of gift cards from participating businesses.

The campaign is designed after the popular board game Monopoly with participants shopping at different spaces on a customized game board. The board consists of 27 businesses in Huntsville-Madison County that, according to the chamber, are shaping the community’s unique character and personality.

“We try and do something that local shopping, to keep those dollars here locally,” Ashley Engles-Ross, vice president/small business, said. “We launched it last year, and we’ve gotten a lot of great feedback on social media and on our website. So, we’re anxious to see how it turns out this year.”

Visit any of the businesses listed below, save the receipts, then scan or take a photo and fill out the game board and submit it to the chamber to be entered in the drawing.

Winners will be chosen to receive $250, $400, or $650 in gift cards to the businesses on the board. Winners will be announced Dec. 7 at the Chamber’s Holiday Open House. Multiple entries are allowed – three receipts equal one entry.

“It’s the perfect time of year to celebrate and promote these businesses,” Engles-Ross said. “They shape how we look, it’s the draw. It’s what people come to communities and what they’re looking for, the shopping, where to eat, all of those things.”

For every $100 spent, the chamber estimates roughly $68 to $73 of it returns to local activity. For more information about the campaign or how to print a game board, visit hsvchamber.org.
