HUNTSVILLE – As Juneteenth celebrations continue into today’s official date of the national holiday, the local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace is also commemorating its accomplishment of keeping over 1,000 kids from sleeping on the floor.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace and the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber are co-hosting the Juneteenth Community Bed Build Event today at 6000 Technology Drive in Cummings Research Park. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle and SHP Huntsville Chapter President Mary Ena Heath will be among the celebrants.
“In this community consistently named in the top 10 best places to live in the United States, no child should be without a bed,” Heath said in a statement. “Yet SHP has already delivered 1,176 new twin beds, mattresses, bedding and pillows all over Huntsville and Madison County to kids who need them. Join us in our goal that no kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”
As of Tuesday morning, SHP had provided 1,176 beds to kids in the Greater Huntsville Community.
The Huntsville Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace had its start in early fall of 2022. A team of leadership and community volunteers have aided SHP in becoming a reliable resource in the community with transitional shelters and school counselors.
“The mission of SHP resonates with our community,” said Ann Kepner, communications manager. “Our mission is to end child bed-lessness and Huntsville takes care of our residents. We have had so much support to build and deliver beds to kids ages 3-17 in the Greater Huntsville Community.”
