Spears announces run for State Board of Education

MADISON – With an aim to help provide students the “resources and support needed to thrive,” Connie Spears launched her campaign for State Board of Education, District 8.

“My vision is to create an innovative and resilient educational system in Alabama that prepares all our students for the challenges of the future,” Spears said in announcing her candidacy. “I aim to work with my fellow board members and our state superintendent of education to cultivate an environment where every student has the resources and support needed to thrive.

“Through collaboration with educators, parents, community members and our Legislature, we can drive meaningful change in our schools.”

A long-time education advocate, Spears retired in 2019 from the City of Madison Board of Education after 10 years. She served on the district’s Capital Planning, Safety and Security, Policy, Community Relations and Advocacy, Curriculum and Instruction and Finance committees. Spears also served as the board’s legislative liaison, advocating for children in Montgomery and Washington, D.C.

While on the Madison school board, she served two terms on the Alabama Association of School Boards Board of Directors and chaired the Advocacy Committee.

“My campaign for the Alabama State Board of Education District 8 will be built on the principles of respect, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence in education,” Spears said. “Together, we can create a brighter future for all our students by advocating for policies that support educators, protect our libraries, and ensure that every child has access to high-quality education.”

Spears recently finished a term with the Madison City Council and is a graduate of Leadership Greater Huntsville and Momentum Leadership. She has a degree in business administration/business management from Auburn University and is a fulltime community volunteer.

She and her husband, Richard, have two sons and a daughter-in-law. They are members of Asbury United Methodist Church.
