State DAR honors area residents with patriotism awards

AUBURN — Retired Army Brig. Gen. Robert Drolet was among six Alabamians – including three from North Alabama – to be honored by the Alabama Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Drolet of Huntsville received the DAR Medal of Honor, the highest honor from the organization.

The awards for “outstanding patriotism” were presented Saturday at the 127th ASDAR Patriotism Luncheon the Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center, Ballroom.

“The Alabama Society DAR is honored to recognize these outstanding individuals whose dedication to patriotism, service, and sacrifice exemplifies the values of our organization,” said ASDAR State Regent Malinda Williams. “Their commitment to our country and communities inspires us all to continue serving and preserving the legacy of our nation’s founders.”

Williams presented the awards with ASDAR National Defense Chair Susan Moore presiding over the luncheon. Army veteran and former Miss Veteran America Mary Ann Hotaling of Athens gave the keynote address.

 The other Alabama Patriots and their respective awards are:

  • John W. Davis of Athens – Ellen Hardin Walworth Medal for Patriotism
  • Harry Sessamen of Birmingham – DAR America 250! Commendation
  • Brookes Brown of Hoover – Outstanding DAR Service for Veterans Award
  • John Chris Williams of Georgiana – Eugenia Washington Founders Medal, Heroism
  • Mary Ann Hotaling of Athens – ASDAR Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Award

The Alabama Society DAR’s membership includes more than 4,000 women in 71 chapters across the state who can trace their lineage to patriots who fought for or provided aid to the American colonists during the Revolutionary War.
