HUNTSVILLE — With reports of elder fraud spiking across the nation, one organization is stepping in to help seniors in the Huntsville area defend themselves from the growing criminal trend.

The support is being provided by TARCOG (Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments), the region’s area agency on aging. TARCOG offers low cost legal assistance to seniors.

At next week’s Senior Medicare Patrol Fraud & Scam Summit, senior citizens will have the chance to learn about the most common scams happening across Alabama. Topics such as cyber security, financial scams, consumer fraud, and legal implications will be covered.

Speakers will include representatives from the Alabama Securities Commission, Better Business Bureau, Redstone Federal Credit Union, Huntsville Police Department, TARCOG’s elder law attorney and resource coordinator for the Senior Medicare Patrol Program.

Exhibitors from state programs, community partners, nonprofit, community organizations and area businessesin the TARCOG region from DeKalb, Jackson, Limestone, Madison, and Marshall counties will also be in attendance to share information and provide resources to attendees.

According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, elder abuse rose by 14% in 2023. Authorities say they expect the trend to continue.

The Summit will be Aug. 8 at the Bob Harrison Wellness and Advocacy Center, 6156 Pulaski Pike, Huntsville.

To attend, call 256-830-0818. Seating is limited to 150. Registration begins at 9 a.m.
