The Tennessee RiverLine is celebrating five years since its launch and a decade since the idea was first conceived, marking the growth of a regional initiative focused on recreation, conservation and economic development along the 652-mile Tennessee River.
The Tennessee RiverLine is a partnership between the University of Tennessee Extension, University of Tennessee, Knoxville and the Tennessee Valley Authority. The initiative has grown into a four-state network of riverfront communities working to improve public access and promote outdoor recreation.
Since launching in 2021, the RiverLine’s RiverTowns Program has partnered with 58 cities and counties. Twenty-three participating communities have hosted nearly 500 recreation and stewardship events, connecting more than 30,000 residents and visitors to the river through paddling trips, hikes and cleanups.
The organization also has completed conceptual designs for 45 riverfront projects, including parks, trails and access points, with $11.5 million in funding secured to begin implementation.
“In just five years, the Tennessee RiverLine has grown from a bold idea into a transformative initiative that is shaping communities and touching lives,” said Brad Collett, executive director of the Tennessee RiverLine. “This remarkable progress is a testament to the power of partnerships and the shared commitment of communities, organizations and individuals united in their belief in the vision of a connected and vibrant Tennessee River Valley.”
The initiative spans a 1.2-million-acre river corridor stretching across Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi and Kentucky. Organizers said future efforts will focus on expanding river access, water trails, signage and recreation infrastructure while continuing to strengthen partnerships with communities throughout the Tennessee Valley. Organizers said the initiative will continue expanding river access, recreation opportunities and community partnerships throughout the Tennessee Valley.
