TUSCALOOSA — The University of Alabama has fired baseball coach Brad Bohannon, the school announced today.

The firing comes in the wake of “suspicious activity” this week related to betting on Crimson Tide baseball games.

Alabama said Bohannon was fired for “among other things, violating the standards, duties and responsibilities expected of university employees.”

On Monday, the state of Ohio halted betting on Alabama games after a state casino commission integrity board member relayed information about bets on the Tide’s game last Friday against LSU, which LSU won 8-6.

Later this week, New Jersey halted betting on Alabama games and today Pennsylvania followed suit, reports said.

“Alabama director of athletics Greg Byrne announced he has initiated the termination process for head baseball coach Brad Bohannon for, among other things, violating the standards, duties, and responsibilities expected of University employees,” the university said in a statement. “Bohannon has been relieved of all duties and Jason Jackson will serve as the interim head coach.

“There will be no further comment at this time pending an ongoing review.”

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey issued a statement Wednesday night on the situation.

“We are aware of reports related to the suspension of wagering Alabama baseball games,” Sankey said. “We will continue to monitor available information and any regulatory activity. As many states have acted to legalize sports gambling, we are reminded of the threats gambling may pose on competitive integrity. Together with our member universities, we will continue to emphasize the importance of regulating, overseeing and providing education related to sports gambling activity.”

Bohannon had been Alabama’s coach since 2018 and was an assistant at Wake Forest, Kentucky and Auburn.

Alabama (9-12 SEC, 30-15 overall) plays Vanderbilt in a weekend series starting tonight.
