Toyota Alabama celebrated its 25th anniversary Thursday, marking a quarter century of growth in Huntsville with a $125,000 donation to five local nonprofit organizations and recognition from state and local leaders.

Since opening in 2001 with a $220 million investment and a single engine line producing engines for the Toyota Tundra, Toyota Alabama has grown into a $1.7 billion manufacturing operation employing approximately 2,400 team members. The Huntsville facility now produces four-cylinder and V6 engines for seven of the nine Toyota vehicles assembled in North America, as well as differentials used in the automaker’s vehicles.

The plant currently assembles nearly 1 million engines and 500,000 differentials annually.

“Toyota Alabama’s decades of growth and success are a testament to our 2,400 committed team members,” said Marc Perry, president of Toyota Alabama. “Their dedication, skill and passion make Toyota a leader in quality and innovation. We are proud of every team member who contributes to this legacy.”

To date, more than 11 million engines have rolled off the Huntsville production lines. Last year, Toyota announced a $282 million investment to expand the facility’s production capabilities to include assembly of three differentials.

Gov. Kay Ivey said Toyota’s success has helped establish Alabama as a leader in automotive manufacturing.

“What began as a historic investment in North Alabama 25 years ago has grown into a world-class manufacturing operation that drives Alabama’s economy and puts our state on the map for automotive innovation,” Ivey said.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Toyota awarded five $25,000 grants to local nonprofits that support students in Huntsville City Schools through the Toyota USA Foundation’s Driving Possibilities initiative.

The recipients include Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tennessee Valley, Free 2 Teach, The Enrichment Center, The Schools Foundation and the Huntsville Hospital Foundation.

The donations build on Toyota’s broader community investment efforts. Over the past 25 years, the company has contributed more than $24 million to local nonprofit organizations and community programs, including nearly $11 million invested in Huntsville City Schools through Driving Possibilities.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said Toyota’s arrival helped pave the way for the city’s manufacturing growth.

“Toyota’s investment in Huntsville was a defining moment for our community,” Battle said. “As one of the first global manufacturers to establish a major presence here, Toyota helped demonstrate that Huntsville could compete on the world stage for advanced manufacturing and innovation. Their success paved the way for other industry leaders to follow.”

Madison Mayor Ranae Bartlett also recognized the company’s impact on the region and proclaimed June 11 as Toyota Alabama Day.

“Congratulations to Toyota Alabama on 25 remarkable years in our community,” Bartlett said. “What began in 2001 with a $220 million investment and a bold vision for advanced manufacturing has grown into a cornerstone of our regional economy. Toyota’s impact reaches far beyond the plant floor. Team members have shown, time and again, that corporate success and community stewardship go hand in hand, giving countless volunteer hours and resources to make life better across North Alabama. We are proud to celebrate this milestone and to proclaim June 11, 2026, as Toyota Alabama Day.”

Toyota directly employs about 48,000 people across the United States and operates 11 manufacturing facilities nationwide. The Huntsville plant remains one of the company’s largest engine manufacturing operations in North America.
